The Saab Viggen was designed to replace the Saab Lansen in the attack role and the Saab Draken in the fighter role, and first flew in 1967. It incorporated a number  of new and unique features for the time, including the canard foreplane and reverse thrust on the afterburner. It was designed for STOL operations off specially prepared roads and highways, but was also capable of operations to Mach 2.

329 were built in several variants between 1970 and 1990, all seeing service with the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet). Although it was marketed in the export arena, no sales eventuated. The aircraft was retired from frontline service in 2005.

  • Flygvapnet Speciell Forarinstruktion (Flight Manual) for the Saab JA37D, the all-weather interceptor variant of the Viggen family. This is Del 1 Kap 1 only which covers the technical description of the aircraft (in Swedish). Manual M5800-370051 dated 2003-06-25 with approx 607 pages.
  • Flight Manual for the Saab JA37 (C variant). This is Chapter 1 only which covers the technical description of the aircraft (in English). Manual M5800-370051 dated 1999-20-01 with approx 593 pages.
  • Manufacturers colour brochure for the Saab Viggen, titled “Viggen Fighter” undated with approx 9 (some double) pages.

Title 2 contains:

  • Flygvapnet Speciell Forarinstruktion (Flight Manual) for the Saab AJS37, the ground attack variant of the Viggen. Del 1 Kap 1, covering the technical description of the aircraft (in Swedish). Manual M5800-370011 dated 1996-06-25 with approx 601 pages.
  • Flygvapnet Speciell Forarinstruktion (Flight Manual) for the Saab AJSH37 and AJSF37, the reconnaissance variants. Del 1 Kap 1 covering the technical description of the aircraft (in Swedish). This manual is supplementary to the AJS37 above manual and covers the differences between the variants.Manual M5800-370021/31 dated 1995-10-01 with approx 154 pages.
  • Flygvapnet Speciell Forarinstruktion (Flight Manual) for the Saab SK37E, the two-seat training variant, examples of which were also converted to the electronic warfare role. Del 1 Kap 1 covering the technical description of the aircraft (in Swedish).
