Title: Macchi C.205 Veltro
The Macchi C.205 Veltro (Greyhound) was a development of the earlier C.202. The Italian Air Force, seeking to improve the performance of the C.202, decided to licence produce the German DB605 engine which became the Fiat RA1050. The DB601 engine used in the C.202 was similar in size to the more powerful DB605 so installing the later engine was an easy adaptation.
The prototype first flew in April 1942 and entered production following flight testing. The first production aircraft flew in September 1942 but the rate of production was slow due to a shortage of engines and some strategic materials. Production was halted in 1944 at the Italian Armistice when 262 had been built. Macchi refurbished and sold examples of the C.205 post-war including conversions of the C.202.
