Title: Bell X-1 series

The Bell X-1 series was number of experimental aircraft produced during the late 1940’s. The original X-1 was the first of the US “X-series” experimental aircraft range and was a rocket engine powered single seat aircraft intended to explore high speed flight from mach one and above. The X-1 named “Glamorous Glennis” and piloted by Chuck Yeager famously was the first aircraft to officially exceed mach one in October 1947.

Later variants of the X-1 were built to investigate various aspects of supersonic flight. The X-1A used the same rocket engine but was larger and heavier with a stepped canopy. The X-1B was similar to the X-1A but with a slightly different wing and was equipped with more than 300 thermal probes to investigate aerodynamic thermal heating. The X-1D was to be used for thermal research and used a new low-pressure fuel system with increased capacity.

This title contains the military flight manual for the Bell X-1A, X-1B and X-1D along with a NASA flight test report on the X-1A. The files have been scanned from the original flight manuals and retain any colour pages unless otherwise stated.
