Title: Bell P-59 Airacomet

The Bell P-59 was a twin-engined single-seat fighter, designed as the first jet powered US aircraft, and first flew in October 1942. It initially used General Electric J31 engines, based on a Whittle jet engine donated by the UK. These engines were underpowered, and coupled to the very conventional design of the aircraft, led to an unimpressive performance.

Consequently the USAAF halved its original order for the aircraft, with only 50 examples being completed, and only used them in a training role. The honour of being the first operational jet fighter went instead to the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star. While the P-59 was not a success it did give the USAAF valuable experience with the operation of jet aircraft.

This title contains the USAAF flight manual and maintenance manual for the Bell P-59 Airacomet. The files have been scanned from the original flight manuals and retain any colour pages.
