Title: Ryan XV-5 Vertifan

The Ryan XV-5 was one of two experimental aircraft types (along with the Lockheed XV-4 Hummingbird) commissioned by the US Army in the early 1960’s to prove the concept of ducted lift-fans for V/STOL flight. Two examples were built as XV-5A’s, but unfortunately both eventually crashed in the mid 1960’s with fatal consequences for the pilots.

One was re-built as the XV-5B and testing continued until 1971 when the program was cancelled. The concept of ducted lift-fans had been proven but the XV-5 suffered some handling and engineering problems and lift-fans were not successfully used in service until the F-35B.

This title contains the manufacturer’s flight manual for the Ryan XV-5B along with a report on flight testing the XV-5A and a brochure on the type when it had an earlier designation. The files have been scanned from the original flight manuals and retain any colour pages unless otherwise stated.
